Liverpool brought Michael Edwards back to Anfield with the idea of pursuing a multi-club model similar to that of Chelsea and Manchester City. However, it then emerged last week that FSG were walking away from buying another team, which saw Edwards’ future cast into doubt. It was initially mooted that the Liverpool owners may want to sell in the future and didn’t want to be tied down to another side, but a fresh update actually suggests the valuation of European teams was the reason the North American businessmen changed their stance. They wanted one in Europe, but ultimately they found the valuations were absurd.“They thought they were way too high for where football is now and especially I suppose the lack of money in European football compared to England. So they didn’t feel like they’d get the same value.“It’s been reported now since that FSG have decided to go in a different direction and so certainly obviously that raises obvious questions about Edwards’ role at Liverpool and amid a lot of feeling that he could well leave again.”In the days following that news, it has been suggested that Edwards’ future is in real doubt. It was suggested that the multi-club plan was the ‘driving force’ behind his return, and now that is no longer on the cards for Liverpool, he doesn’t appear to have a clear role anymore.Like Richard Hughes, a move to Saudi Arabia has now been mentioned for the Reds chief. The departures of two key behind-the-scenes figures would not be ideal for FSG to deal with, but it may be the case that there are plenty of changes at Anfield ahead of the 2026/27 season getting underway.Join Our NewsletterReceive a digest of our best Liverpool content each week direct to your mailbox
